International Conference on "Democracy and Diversities: Experiences for the Construction of Peace, Development and Inclusion" in Guatemala City, February 15-16, 2018
The University of San Carlos de Guatemala held a two-day conference on the topic "Democracy and Diversity" that was attended by scholars from the R4D partner countries and Central and Latin America.
Guatemala currently experiences a political crisis. First, institutional reforms are debated that allow for more participation and representation. Second, state structures are questioned in that they should better relate to the pluricultural reality of the country. Yet, these issues and the need for reforms are not exclusive to Guatemala. A better understanding of how other societies address these problems can contribute to the debate.
In this context, the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, as the only public university in the country, through the School of History and within the framework of the international R4D project "Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict in Fragile States", has organized the conference on "Democracy and Diversities". The seminar panels and a public panel discussed different experiences of democratic order construction. Participants included researchers from the "Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict in Fragile States" project from Egypt, India and Switzerland, researchers from Latin America, researchers from Guatemala, postgraduate and advanced students from Guatemala, and policy-makers and diplomats.
The conference was held in Guatemala City on February 15-16, 2018. For more information, see the conference Download program (PDF, 331 KB).
