R4D Conference at University of Geneva, November 3-5, 2019

Bringing together researchers of the “Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict in Fragile States”-project at the University of Geneva, this conference facilitated a collaborative discussion around the joint publication of two edited volumes.

by Seraina Rüegger

On the first day, authors presented their chapters regarding the integrative theme “Natural Resources and Grievances,” which will be addressed in a book co-edited by Hamid Ali and Lars-Erik Cederman. This integrative theme examines the extent to which inequality and conflict is triggered by resource extraction. The book includes quantitative chapters that focus on oil or other mineral extraction and ethnic conflict as well as several case studies including: natural resources and conflict in the Indian state of Odisha, ethnic mobilization in mining areas in Zambia and disputes over strategic resources among indigenous communities in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

The second day focused on the integrative theme “Perceived and Objective Grievances,” which will also result in a book, co-edited by Simon Hug and Madhushree Sekher. Through case and comparative studies, this volume will examine the linkages between objective and perceived inequalities and their effect on conflict. Similar to the first volume, this study will contribute to a better understanding of how grievances are socially and politically constructed and how they spur political mobilization processes.

In addition, on the second day, conference participants organized an event, "Building Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies" in the Geneva Peace Week 2019 at the Maison de la Paix. The event contributed to the Geneva Peace Week's thematic cluster on "Global Perspectives on Peacebuilding." The speakers presented their findings from field research in Guatemala, India, and Zambia, focusing on the impact of political inclusion of ethnic minority groups in mitigating conflict in the developing world. The participants discussed their findings and experiences in the context of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. The event also benefited from insights from IO and NGO representatives.

On the third day, participants discussed other organizational matters related to the project. Both book proposals, including complete chapters, will be submitted to publishers in 2020.
